Objective: This study investigates the effects of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) supplementation on cortisol levels, anxiety, and cognitive function in individuals suffering from moderate to high stress.
Context: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for its potential to reduce stress and improve well-being. This research focuses on its ability to modulate stress responses, specifically by reducing cortisol, improving anxiety symptoms, and enhancing cognitive performance.
Methods Used
Approach: The research was a 60-day, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 100 adults (aged 25-55) with moderate to high levels of stress participated. They were randomly assigned to either a treatment group receiving 300 mg of standardized Ashwagandha root extract twice daily or a placebo group. Both groups were assessed at baseline, 30 days, and 60 days for cortisol levels, anxiety, and cognitive function.
