Abstract Summary
Objective: This study examines the effects of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) on managing blood pressure in individuals with stress-induced hypertension.
Context: Chronic stress is a known risk factor for the development of hypertension, and Ashwagandha has been traditionally used for its stress-relieving properties. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Ashwagandha supplementation could lower blood pressure in adults experiencing stress-induced hypertension.
Methods Used
Approach: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted over 10 weeks, involving 150 participants aged 30-50, all of whom were experiencing stress-induced hypertension (systolic BP > 140 mmHg, with self-reported high stress levels). Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 600 mg of Ashwagandha extract daily or a placebo. Blood pressure and cortisol levels were measured at baseline and at the end of the study.
Data Collection: Blood pressure readings were taken using an ambulatory blood pressure monitoring system. Cortisol levels were assessed via blood samples. Participants’ stress levels were monitored using the Perceived Stress Scale.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: The study found a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in participants receiving Ashwagandha. Systolic pressure dropped by an average of 15 mmHg and diastolic by 10 mmHg in the Ashwagandha group, compared to reductions of 5 mmHg systolic and 2 mmHg diastolic in the placebo group. Cortisol levels were also reduced by 22% in the Ashwagandha group, further supporting its role in stress and blood pressure management.
Health Implications: The results suggest that Ashwagandha may be beneficial for individuals with stress-induced hypertension by simultaneously reducing stress and lowering blood pressure. These findings highlight Ashwagandha's potential as a dual-purpose supplement for cardiovascular and stress-related conditions.
