Abstract Summary
Objective: This study investigates the impact of Ashwagandha supplementation on sleep quality and insomnia in adults experiencing sleep disturbances.
Context: Ashwagandha, known for its adaptogenic properties, has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to manage stress, which can play a crucial role in improving sleep quality. Its potential as a natural remedy for enhancing sleep has gained attention, especially among those suffering from insomnia and sleep-related issues.
Methods Used
Approach: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted over 8 weeks with 150 participants (ages 30-60) diagnosed with mild to moderate insomnia. Participants were divided into two groups, one receiving 300 mg of Ashwagandha root extract twice daily, while the other group received a placebo.
Data Collection: Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: By the end of the study, participants in the Ashwagandha group experienced a 30% improvement in PSQI scores and a 25% reduction in ISI scores, compared to a 10% improvement in the placebo group. Participants also reported falling asleep faster and experiencing fewer awakenings during the night.
Health Implications: This study supports the efficacy of Ashwagandha supplementation in improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia symptoms. The findings suggest that Ashwagandha can be a beneficial natural treatment for sleep disturbances, especially in individuals with stress-related sleep issues. Further research is recommended to explore its long-term effects and benefits in other sleep disorders.
