Abstract Summary
Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy of KSM-66 Ashwagandha in reducing stress and anxiety levels in adults.
Context: Chronic stress and anxiety can lead to various health issues, including hormonal imbalances. Adaptogens like Ashwagandha are believed to help the body manage stress more effectively.
Methods Used
Approach: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted over 8 weeks with 64 healthy adults experiencing stress. Participants received 300 mg of KSM-66 Ashwagandha extract twice daily or a placebo.
Data Collection: Primary outcomes measured included Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) scores and serum cortisol levels. Secondary measures involved assessments using the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS).
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: KSM-66 Ashwagandha supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in stress and anxiety indicators:
PSS scores: 44.0% reduction from baseline (p < 0.001).
Aerum cortisol levels: 27.9% decrease (p < 0.001).
GHQ-28 scores: 72.3% decrease in total scores, with notable reductions in subcategories:
Somatic symptoms: 76.1%
Anxiety and insomnia: 69.7%
Social dysfunction: 68.1%
Severe depression: 79.3%
DASS scores: 71.6% decrease in total scores, with reductions in:
Depression: 77.0%
Anxiety: 75.6%
Stress: 64.2%
Health Implications: KSM-66 Ashwagandha may serve as an effective natural intervention for reducing stress and anxiety, potentially aiding in managing stress-related hormonal imbalances.
