Abstract Summary
Objective:
This study investigates the interaction between Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) supplementation and alcohol consumption. It aims to explore the potential benefits, side effects, and interactions, focusing on how alcohol affects Ashwagandha’s adaptogenic properties, specifically in reducing stress and supporting liver health.
Context:
Ashwagandha is known for its adaptogenic benefits, including stress relief, anxiety reduction, and anti-inflammatory effects. In contrast, alcohol consumption stresses the liver and central nervous system, potentially counteracting Ashwagandha's positive effects. With limited research available on the interaction between these two substances, this study seeks to clarify whether alcohol impacts Ashwagandha’s effectiveness in managing stress and overall liver health.
Methods Used
Approach:
A 10-week, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted with 100 participants (men and women, aged 25–50) who consumed moderate alcohol (up to 14 drinks per week). Participants were split into two groups: one group received 300 mg of Ashwagandha root extract daily, and the other a placebo, both alongside regular alcohol consumption. Stress levels, liver function, and well-being were assessed at baseline, 5 weeks, and 10 weeks.
Data Collection:
Stress levels were measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), while liver function was evaluated through blood tests measuring liver enzymes (ALT, AST). Cortisol levels and self-reported well-being questionnaires were used to assess mental health and physical functioning.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact of Alcohol on Ashwagandha’s Effectiveness:
Participants taking Ashwagandha while consuming alcohol showed varied results. While 60% reported reduced stress and anxiety, similar to the placebo group (55%), there was a minor increase in liver enzymes (ALT and AST) in the Ashwagandha group, suggesting potential mild stress on liver function. No severe liver dysfunction was recorded.
Impact on Stress and Liver Function:
Ashwagandha's ability to reduce stress was slightly reduced when consumed alongside alcohol, particularly in participants who drank more than 10 alcoholic beverages per week. These individuals experienced less reduction in cortisol levels. Mild side effects, such as nausea and digestive discomfort, were reported in 15% of the Ashwagandha group but resolved within two weeks.
Health Implications
The study indicates that Ashwagandha may still offer stress-reducing benefits when combined with moderate alcohol consumption. However, the effects may be weakened, and there could be minor implications for liver function. Individuals taking Ashwagandha for stress reduction should limit alcohol consumption to optimize the supplement's benefits and minimize potential liver strain. Additional research is needed to assess long-term liver health outcomes.
