Abstract Summary
Objective: To evaluate the anxiolytic effect of high-concentration ashwagandha root extract on adults experiencing chronic stress and anxiety.
Context: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has shown adaptogenic and anxiolytic properties in traditional and modern medicine. This study investigates its efficacy in reducing anxiety and cortisol levels in a clinical setting.
Methods Used
Approach: A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted over eight weeks.
Data Collection: Participants (n=64) with elevated anxiety symptoms were randomized into two groups: a treatment group receiving 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily and a placebo group. Anxiety levels were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), and serum cortisol levels were assessed at baseline and study end.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
The group receiving ashwagandha exhibited a significant reduction in HAM-A anxiety scores and cortisol levels compared to the placebo group. Participants in the treatment group reported improved stress tolerance and sleep quality, suggesting ashwagandha’s efficacy as an adjunct therapy for anxiety reduction.
