Abstract Summary
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) lotion on photoaged facial skin in healthy adults.
Context: Photoaging, resulting from prolonged sun exposure, leads to skin damage characterized by wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. Ashwagandha, known for its adaptogenic properties, has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for rejuvenation. This study investigates its potential benefits when applied topically to photoaged skin.
Methods Used
Approach: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
Data Collection: Fifty-six healthy men and women aged 18 to 60 with Fitzpatrick skin types III-VI were enrolled. Participants were randomly assigned to apply either an 8% Ashwagandha lotion or a placebo lotion on their facial skin twice daily for 60 days. Assessments included clinical evaluations, photographic analysis, and participant self-reports to measure changes in skin parameters such as hydration, elasticity, and pigmentation.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
The study demonstrated that the group using the Ashwagandha lotion experienced significant improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and reduction in pigmentation compared to the placebo group. No adverse effects were reported, indicating that topical application of Ashwagandha is both effective and safe for enhancing skin health in individuals with photoaged skin.
