Abstract Summary
Objective: To evaluate the impact of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) supplementation on cortisol levels in individuals experiencing stress.
Context: Ashwagandha, a traditional adaptogenic herb, is reputed for its stress-reducing properties. This study investigates its efficacy in modulating cortisol, a primary stress hormone.
Methods Used
Approach: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effects of ashwagandha on cortisol levels.
Data Collection: Comprehensive searches were conducted across databases including PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus up to December 2023. Inclusion criteria encompassed RCTs involving ashwagandha supplementation with reported cortisol measurements.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
The analysis incorporated nine RCTs with a total of 400 participants. Results indicated that ashwagandha supplementation significantly reduced cortisol levels by an average of 20% compared to placebo. The findings suggest that ashwagandha may effectively lower cortisol levels in stressed individuals.
