Abstract Summary
Objective: This study investigates the effects of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) supplementation on hormonal balance, specifically examining cortisol and thyroid hormones (T3, T4, TSH) in individuals with subclinical hypothyroidism.
Context: Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, is believed to have properties that support the endocrine system. The focus of this research is on its ability to influence hormonal balance by modulating cortisol and thyroid hormones, which are key in managing stress responses and metabolic functions.
Methods Used
Approach: The research was a 90-day, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 60 adults (aged 25-45) diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism were recruited. Participants were randomized into two groups: the treatment group, which received 600 mg of standardized Ashwagandha root extract daily, and a placebo group. Assessments were conducted at baseline, 45 days, and 90 days, focusing on cortisol and thyroid hormone levels.
Data Collection: Cortisol levels were measured using serum samples collected at each interval. Thyroid function was evaluated by measuring levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4) through blood tests. Additional data on self-reported energy levels, mood, and overall well-being were collected via questionnaires at each time point.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: The Ashwagandha group showed a notable reduction in serum cortisol levels by an average of 20%, suggesting improved stress management. Significant improvements in thyroid function were also observed, with a 17% increase in T3 and 12% increase in T4 levels, along with a decrease in TSH levels by 15%, indicating improved thyroid function. The placebo group did not show comparable changes.
Health Implications: These findings support the use of Ashwagandha as a natural aid for improving hormonal balance, particularly for individuals with subclinical hypothyroidism. The adaptogenic effects of Ashwagandha may contribute to better stress resilience and enhanced metabolic function, promoting overall hormonal health.
