Abstract Summary
Objective: This study investigates the effects of combining Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) with other adaptogenic herbs, specifically Rhodiola rosea and Bacopa monnieri, on cortisol levels, anxiety, and cognitive function in adults experiencing moderate to high stress.
Context: Ashwagandha is a well-known adaptogen in Ayurvedic medicine, commonly used to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. The inclusion of Rhodiola rosea, an herb noted for its anti-fatigue effects, and Bacopa monnieri, recognized for cognitive enhancement, aims to examine whether combining these herbs amplifies Ashwagandha's benefits. This research focuses on the combination’s potential to modulate stress responses, reduce cortisol, improve anxiety symptoms, and enhance cognitive function.
Methods Used
Approach: This study was conducted as a 12-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial with a total of 150 adults (aged 25-55) under moderate to high stress levels. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups:
- An Ashwagandha-only group receiving 300 mg of standardized Ashwagandha root extract twice daily,
- A combined herb group receiving 150 mg each of standardized Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, and Bacopa twice daily,
- A placebo group.
Each group was assessed at baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks for changes in cortisol levels, anxiety, and cognitive performance.
Data Collection: Primary outcomes were cortisol levels measured via serum samples and anxiety evaluated through the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) scale. Cognitive function was assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), with additional assessments for sleep quality and fatigue using validated questionnaires.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: Results revealed a notable reduction in cortisol levels in both the Ashwagandha-only and combined herb groups, with a significantly greater effect observed in the combined herb group (an average decrease of 30% versus 22% in the Ashwagandha-only group). Anxiety scores improved across both groups, with the combined herb group experiencing a 50% reduction and the Ashwagandha-only group a 40% reduction. Cognitive function, particularly memory recall and processing speed, showed marked improvements in the combined herb group. Sleep quality and fatigue reduction were also more pronounced in the combined group.
Health Implications: The combination of Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, and Bacopa may offer an enhanced approach to stress management, providing greater reductions in cortisol and anxiety compared to Ashwagandha alone. The improved cognitive and anti-fatigue benefits suggest a synergistic effect when these adaptogens are used together, making this combination a promising natural intervention for comprehensive mental well-being.
