Abstract Summary
Objective: This study examines the suitability of KSM-66 Ashwagandha for individuals new to supplementation, focusing on its safety, efficacy, and potential side effects.
Context: KSM-66 is a highly concentrated, full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract known for its adaptogenic properties, including stress reduction and cognitive enhancement. Understanding its effects on beginners is crucial for safe and effective use.
Methods Used
Approach: A 60-day double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted with 100 healthy adults aged 25-55 without experience with Ashwagandha supplementation. Participants received either 300 mg of KSM-66 Ashwagandha twice daily or a placebo. Assessments were made at baseline, 30 days, and 60 days, focusing on stress levels, cognitive function, and adverse effects.
Data Collection: Stress levels were measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), cognitive function was assessed with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and adverse effects were monitored through self-reported questionnaires.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Beginners: Participants receiving KSM-66 Ashwagandha exhibited a significant reduction in stress levels, with a 35% decrease in PSS scores compared to a 10% reduction in the placebo group. Cognitive function improved modestly, with a 15% increase in MoCA scores versus a 5% improvement in the placebo group. Notably, 8% of participants reported mild gastrointestinal discomfort during the first week, resolved without intervention.
Health Implications: KSM-66 Ashwagandha appears to be suitable for beginners, offering benefits such as stress reduction and cognitive enhancement with minimal side effects. The mild gastrointestinal issues reported were transient and did not lead to discontinuation. These findings suggest that KSM-66 Ashwagandha is a safe and effective adaptogen for individuals new to supplementation.
