Abstract Summary
Objective: This study investigates the effects of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) supplementation on sexual function in healthy women.
Context: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance vitality and sexual well-being. This research focuses on its potential to improve sexual function in women.
Methods Used
Approach: The research was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. A total of 80 healthy women aged 18–50 years were enrolled. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 300 mg of standardized Ashwagandha root extract twice daily or a placebo for eight weeks. Assessments were conducted at baseline and after the intervention period.
Data Collection: The primary outcome was sexual function, evaluated using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Secondary outcomes included assessments of sexual distress and overall satisfaction.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: Results indicated a significant improvement in sexual function among women in the Ashwagandha group compared to the placebo group. The FSFI scores increased by an average of 4.2 points in the Ashwagandha group, indicating enhanced sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and reduced pain. No significant adverse effects were reported.
Health Implications: Ashwagandha supplementation may serve as a natural intervention to improve sexual function in healthy women, supporting its traditional use in enhancing female sexual health.
