Abstract Summary
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of an eight-week therapy with Ashwagandha Root Extract (ARE) in improving sexual health in healthy adult men.
Context: Ashwagandha, a traditional Indian Ayurvedic remedy, is known for its adaptogenic properties and potential benefits in enhancing sexual function in both men and women.
Methods Used
Approach: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted over eight weeks. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 300 mg of ARE twice daily or a placebo.
Data Collection: The study assessed outcomes using the Satisfying Sexual Events (SSEs) metric, the Sexual Desire Inventory (SDI-2), the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score, semen parameters, and the Quality of Life (QOL) using the SF-12 tool. Assessments were conducted at baseline, week 2, week 4, and week 8.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Significant improvements were observed in the Ashwagandha group compared to the placebo group in the following areas:
Semen Parameters: Increases in semen volume (p=0.005), sperm number (p=0.006), sperm concentration (p=0.007), and sperm morphology (p=0.007).
Sexual Desire and Function: Enhanced scores in the SDI-2 (p<0.05) and improvements in the orgasm and sexual desire domains of the IIEF (p<0.05).
Quality of Life: Better SF-12 scores (p<0.0001).
No adverse events were reported during the study, indicating that ARE is safe and effective in improving sexual health in healthy men.
